Natural clay Ganesh idols

Clay Ganesh Idols

Ekadanta Stores is a family workshop in Hyderabad making natural clay Ganesh idols by hand. Every clay Vinayaka idol is shaped from river clay, dried in the shade and finished with non-toxic colours, so the Ganapathi you welcome home returns safely to water at visarjan.

We make idols from 4 inches for a home shrine up to 7 feet for a community pandal, in local clay and premium Kolkata clay finishes, with delivery across Hyderabad and Telangana.

What are clay Ganesh idols?

A clay Ganesh idol is a murti sculpted from natural earth — the oldest and most scripturally rooted form of the festival idol. Traditionally, families shaped a small Ganesha from the clay of a nearby pond, worshipped it for the days of the festival, and returned it to the same water. Nothing was bought, nothing was wasted, and nothing harmful was left behind.

Modern plaster of Paris idols broke that cycle. They are moulded quickly and painted with synthetic enamel, but they do not dissolve. Natural clay Ganesh idols restore the original practice with the craftsmanship of trained shilpa artisans: hand-built armatures, sculpted features, slow shade drying and mineral or water-based colour.

At our workshop the clay is cleaned and kneaded for days before a single idol is started. The body is built up in stages, the face and ornaments are carved by hand, and the idol is left to cure so it will not crack. Because each piece is handmade, no two clay Vinayaka idols are ever identical.

Benefits of choosing a clay idol

  • Dissolves fully in water within hours
  • No gypsum, plastic or chemical residue
  • Safe home immersion in a drum or tub
  • Non-toxic natural water colours
  • Traditional handmade craftsmanship
  • Clay water can be poured on plants
  • Supports local Hyderabad artisans
  • Approved for eco-friendly festival drives

Beyond the environment, families tell us a clay idol simply feels different — the surface is warm and matte rather than glossy, the features are sculpted rather than moulded, and the idol carries the mark of the hands that made it.

Sizes: 4 inches to 7 feet

Choose the size by where the idol will sit. A 4 to 9 inch idol fits a home shrine, desk or office pooja room. A 10 to 18 inch idol is the most popular family choice and is comfortable to carry to immersion. A 20 inch to 3 feet idol suits a living hall, a small apartment block or a shop. From 4 feet to 7 feet, idols are made to order for associations, temples and street pandals with a reinforced clay base for safe transport.

Our 10 inch idols are the most requested size of the season and are available in both local clay and premium Kolkata clay finishing.

Eco friendly by design

An eco friendly Vinayaka idol is not a marketing label at our workshop — it is a material choice made at every step. The clay is natural, the colours are water-based, the base is clay rather than plaster, and decorative elements are made from the same earth instead of thermocol or plastic. When you immerse the idol, the water clouds, the form softens and within a few hours the Ganesha has returned to soil.

The handmade process

Clay selection and cleaning, kneading, core building, sculpting the torso and face, carving ornaments and the crown, shade drying over several days, sanding and smoothing, base finishing, and finally colouring or leaving the natural clay tone. A small idol takes two to three days; a 6 feet pandal idol takes several weeks and is booked months ahead.

  • Natural river and Kolkata clay
  • Hand-built, never machine moulded
  • Shade dried to prevent cracks
  • Hand-carved crowns and ornaments
  • Water-based non-toxic finish
  • Quality checked before dispatch

Available colours and finishes

You can order idols in the natural clay tone (raw earthy matte, the most eco-friendly option), in traditional colour with a painted dhoti, crown and ornaments, or in a premium Kolkata clay finish with fine detailing on the face and jewellery. Popular colour themes include saffron and gold, white and gold, red and gold, and pastel natural shades. Golden accents are applied sparingly with non-toxic paint.

Idol care before and during the festival

Keep the idol indoors on a firm, level platform away from rain, damp walls and direct sunlight. Dust it with a dry soft cloth — never wipe a clay idol with a wet cloth or sprinkle water on it, as clay softens quickly. Lift larger idols from the base with two people. Place flowers and garlands around rather than resting heavy items on the arms or crown.

Delivery and immersion

We deliver across Hyderabad including LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Hayathnagar, Nagole, Uppal, Dilsukhnagar and Kothapet, and ship larger orders across Telangana. Deliveries are scheduled one to two days before the puja so the idol arrives fresh. For visarjan, lower small idols into a wide drum of water at home, let them dissolve fully, and pour the clay water around plants. Larger idols can go to municipal immersion ponds.
